Google has recently introduced Google AI Mode, a new feature designed to transform how we search for information online. Currently, it’s exclusive to users in the U.S. who either join a waitlist or subscribe to Google One Premium. To explore this feature, head over to google.com/aimode. Curious about what it offers? Let’s dive into how it works, its benefits, and its potential downsides.

What is Google AI Mode?

Once you log in (or sign up and log in), Google AI Mode greets you with a dashboard featuring a menu and an “Ask AI Mode” search option. From here, you can ask questions directly, and the AI delivers answers that are typically accurate and helpful—think of it as a Google-flavoured ChatGPT. Each response is paired with resources like website links or YouTube videos, giving you a solid foundation for the information provided.

However, there’s a limitation: it’s only available in English since it’s U.S.-exclusive for now. Try asking a question in another language, like Hindi, and you’ll hit a wall; it simply won’t work.

How Does It Enhance Search?

Google AI Mode shines when handling precise, user-specific questions. Unlike some AI tools that might generate fabricated answers when stumped, AI Mode takes a smarter approach. If it can’t provide a direct answer, it suggests relevant YouTube videos or websites that contain the information you need. This not only boosts the reliability of search results but also safeguards against misinformation. Additionally, Google’s clarification on AI Overview link positioning reveals that such links are tracked as a single position in Search Console, which could impact how site owners interpret their traffic data.

Personalised Answers: A Blessing and a Curse

One of AI Mode’s standout features is its ability to offer personalised help for queries. This tailored approach is great for users seeking quick, relevant answers. But here’s the flip side: as more people turn to AI-driven search, website owners, particularly those in blogging, articles, or news niches, might see a dip in traffic. Why visit a site if AI Mode gives you the answer upfront? That said, the traffic that does trickle through could be more valuable, consisting of highly engaged users seeking in-depth content.

Pros and Cons of Google AI Mode

For General Users:

  • Quick, accurate answers to questions.
  • Credible resources (e.g., websites, YouTube links) included with responses.
  • Personalised answers tailored to your query.
  • Protection from incorrect or fabricated information.

For Website Owners:

  • Possible traffic decline, especially for content-driven sites.
  • Higher-quality leads from users who do click through.
  • A push to create niche, detailed content that AI can’t fully replace.

What I Thought

After exploring Google AI Mode, it’s clear it’s a win for general users who want fast, reliable answers backed by solid resources. However, for website owners in content-heavy niches like blogs, articles, and news, it’s a mixed bag, less traffic, but potentially more meaningful engagement. As AI search grows, adapting to this shift will be key. For now, AI
